Area converter — square metres, square feet, acres and hectares
Land is sold in acres in one country and hectares in the next, while flats are listed in square metres or square feet depending on the site. Thirteen area units, one running total.
How to use it
- 1
Type into any row — say m² or ft². The results appear immediately, no button needed.
- 2
Need a combined figure? Fill in two rows, for example m² and ha, and they are added together before converting.
- 3
Set how many digits you want (4–12) and click a result to copy the plain number.
Exact conversion factors
These are the definitions the calculator uses. Nothing here is rounded for convenience — where a value is exact by definition, it says so.
- 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² exactly · 1 m² = 10.7639104 ft²
- 1 acre = 4046.8564224 m² = 43 560 ft² = 0.404685642 ha
- 1 ha = 10 000 m² = 2.47105381 acres
- 1 mi² = 2.58998811 km² = 640 acres
m² = ft² × 0.09290304 · ft² = m² × 10.7639104 · ha = m² ÷ 10 000 · ac = m² ÷ 4046.8564224Area conversion table — every unit

How this converter works
Area units grow fast. A square kilometre is a million square metres, and a square mile is 640 acres — errors of a factor of ten are easy to make and expensive to discover later. Seeing every unit at once makes a wrong order of magnitude obvious immediately.
The hectare is not an SI unit but it survives everywhere in farming and planning: 10 000 m², or a square 100 m on a side. The acre has a stranger history — one chain by one furlong, the strip a team of oxen could plough in a day — which is why it lands on 4046.86 m² instead of a round number.
Notes and abbreviations
- ha — hectare, 10 000 m²; a — are, 100 m²
- ac — acre, 1/640 of a square mile, 4046.8564224 m²
- A football pitch is roughly 0.7 ha; a UK allotment plot is about 250 m²
Questions
How many square feet are in a square metre?
10.7639104 ft². The factor is the length factor squared: 3.28084² = 10.7639.
How big is one acre?
4046.8564224 m², 0.404685642 ha, or 43 560 ft². Roughly a square 63.6 m on each side.
Does the converter handle plot sizes given in both units?
Yes. Type 2 in the hectare row and 3 in the acre row and the total appears in every other unit at once.
