Exact conversion factors
These are the definitions the calculator uses. Nothing here is rounded for convenience — where a value is exact by definition, it says so.
- 1 byte = 8 bits, so 1 MB/s = 8 Mbit/s
- 100 Mbit/s = 12.5 MB/s = 45 GB per hour
- 1 Gbit/s = 125 MB/s · 1 Gbit/s = 450 GB per hour
- 1 MiB/s = 8.388608 Mbit/s — binary megabyte, 4.86 percent larger
- A 4 GB file over 100 Mbit/s takes 320 s at full speed

How this converter works
Providers advertise in bits because the number looks eight times bigger. A "100 megabit" line delivers 12.5 MB/s at best, and real transfers land lower once protocol overhead, Wi-Fi and the far end are taken into account — treat these results as the ceiling, not the promise.
The GB per hour row answers the planning question directly: how much can this link actually shift overnight? A 50 Mbit/s upload moves 22.5 GB in an hour, so a 200 GB backup needs about nine hours of clean uptime.
Notes and abbreviations
- Lowercase b means bit, uppercase B means byte — 8 bits
- Mbps and Mbit/s are the same thing; MBps and MB/s are eight times faster
- MiB/s uses the binary megabyte of 1 048 576 bytes

How fast is 100 Mbps in MB/s?
12.5 MB/s. Divide any bit rate by 8 to get the byte rate.
How long will a 25 GB download take on 200 Mbit/s?
200 Mbit/s is 25 MB/s, so 1000 seconds — about 17 minutes at full speed.
Why is my download slower than the advertised speed?
Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi losses and the server at the other end all cut into it. The figures here are the theoretical maximum.
