How this converter works

This is the page that explains the missing space on your hard drive. Manufacturers sell a terabyte as 1 000 000 000 000 bytes, while Windows reports capacity in tebibytes of 1024⁴ bytes and calls them TB. The same drive is 1 TB and 0.909 TiB — nothing has vanished, the labels just disagree.

Bits are here too, one eighth of a byte, which matters whenever network speed meets file size. A 100 Mbit/s connection moves 12.5 MB per second at best, so a 4 GB download needs at least five and a half minutes even on a perfect line.

Questions

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

The drive holds 10¹² bytes. The operating system divides by 1024 three times and prints 931 — those are really gibibytes.

How long does a 4 GB file take on 100 Mbit/s?

4 GB is 32 000 megabits, so 320 seconds at full speed — five minutes twenty.

Is MB the same as MiB?

No. 1 MiB is 1 048 576 bytes, 4.86 percent more than 1 MB.
